The adveture has started and the first race to La Rochelle is over. We came fourth (or better – see main Clipper site for outcome of protest) which is a splendid start to the campaign. There are updated photos for the Gosport to Hull delivery reace (search for Pilgrims Race), the start at Hull (search Hull or start) and the La Rochelle stopover (search La Rochelle)
This site is for camp followers, the groupies and supporters of Spirit of Australia. It’s also for those that had no choice and need dragging and screaming into sailing and the world of clipper racing. Don’t despair this may be the excuse for a holiday.
The clipper 09/10 Round the World race starts in Hull on the east coast of the UK and then stops off at La Rochelle, Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town, Fremantle/Perth (our home port), Singapore, Qingdao, San Francisco, Panama, Jamaica, New York, Sydney (Nova Scotia), Cork, Rotterdam and finishing at Hull.
I’m a supporter and I’ve got a badge to prove it . . .
How do you recognise your fellow supporters. A bit like football supporters have their scarves, Spirit of Australia supporters have their badges.
All free, just ask and they’ll be mailed out to you. Get your badges
I’m going to . . .
If you’re going to a stopover, check out the page for that location. Let your fellow supporters know you’ll be there. Meet up for lunch and/or swap stories in the bar about being abandoned whilst your friend/partner/son/daughter/brother/sister/mother/father or even grandparent went off racing.
Get involved. Strangers are merely friends you haven’t yet met!
I’ve been to . . .
After you come back from the stopover to your ‘real life’ share your photographs and stories with your fellow supporters. It’s really easy, just e-mail your stories, your photos or simply forward your links to Flickr (or whatever floats your boat) and they’ll be added to the site. Not all of us can find the time or have the resources to follow the fleet around but we’d love to share the experience, even if it is secondhand.
Rule 17 – the language on board will be English . . .
With a boat full of Australians, some British and a smattering of sailors from around the world, it’s an obvious choice to have English as the language on board. Everyone will understand everyone – I think!
I’ve kicked off the Spirit of Australia dictionary with a post on thongs. Add to it with whatever takes your fancy with the theme of what makes Australia different. Nothing (too) rude as younger members of the family may be readers.
(England won the Ashes this year. Having mentioned it once, that subject is out)
Follow the Rule 17 – the language will be English category on the right
Agony aunt – while you were away . . .
The crew are off and the supporters have waved them goodbye. If you want to have a rant when you’re having a ‘bad hair day’ this is the place to share your woes. Amusing stories or disasters with happy endings are the style you should aim for. Any children’s drawings relating to the crew or the Clipper Race are welcome. If they can’t be emailed simply post them and we’ll sort out the scanning bit.
